Almost every wedding is based on traditions: buying and exchanging wedding rings, wearing a white dress, walking down the aisle with your father and having a bridal bouquet are already some of the traditions you find almost everywhere!
Every country and culture has its own traditions when it comes to getting married. Below is a nice list of special wedding traditions from different countries! We are curious to know if you already knew them!
You must be wondering by now: HUH? But in Denmark, the bride is NOT allowed to see her own wedding dress before the wedding. If this does happen, every stitch of yarn represents one tear in her marriage.
At our eastern neighbours, the night before the wedding the party 'Polterabend' is held. During this feast, porcelain crockery is broken by the families. which has to be cleaned up by the bride-to-be. This tradition is entirely based on the old proverb 'shards bring happiness'.
A Hungarian and Romanian tradition of the past is that people tried to kidnap the bride. If the kidnappers succeeded, it was a sign that the groom was not worthy of the bride's hand.
In India, the whole celebration of marriage can take up to 5 days! However, the actual wedding takes only 2-3 hours of this. In North India, it is a tradition that the groom comes to the wedding on a decorated horse, where he is joined by friends and family with songs, dancing and fireworks. 5 days of celebration AND your prince on the (white) horse, who wouldn't want that?
During Italian weddings, the groom's tie is often cut. Male friends of the bride and groom then go around with this tie and 'sell' small pieces of it. The money raised goes towards the couple's honeymoon! So men, if you marry an Italian beauty, don't buy an overpriced tie!
Actually this is called a Dutch tradition, but we were not aware of it yet... In fact, it is said that the cork from the first champagne bottle opened at the wedding should be placed under the bride's pillow during the wedding night! This cork is said to bless your marriage with a good sex life! Maybe go ahead and try it out anyway! Not shot, always wrong! Do you know more fun or weird traditions? Let us know!
