We all know the engagement ring, but what is this emerging trend among couples called the 'promise ring' or promise ring? This ring is given even before engagement as a sign of commitment, love and connection. Now you will think that this has exactly the same meaning as an engagement ring, right?
That's right, only some couples are not yet ready for 'the real thing' or don't feel the need to put a label on the relationship. Still, many couples feel the need to express a promise to each other and show each other that it is more than just dating. Besides, a promise ring comes with no time pressure to get married.
"We are having a nice and fun time together but have no desire to get married"
The above quote must seem familiar to you because it is becoming more and more common. According to the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), fewer and fewer people are getting married. This decline is mainly playing out among people under the age of 50. Where twenty somethings say they want to get married one day. Which, according to CBS, happens mostly in cases as confirmation of the relationship or due to the presence of children or a desire for children.
As a result, couples stay together longer without an engagement ring being involved, so the group eligible for a promise ring has grown and the offerings have become more popular.
Both rings are a symbol of love and commitment, only there are some bigger and smaller differences between these two rings. For instance, an engagement ring is really meant to eventually marry each other, while a promise ring - the name says it all - is given with a promise. This promise can have different meanings, depending on the giver's promise.
Other typical features of a promise ring are that they;
There are favourite ring styles for these rings too. It could be a modern ring with several bands on top of each other, a vintage ring with coloured stones or a ring with a letter. There are no rules for choosing a promise ring because everyone is different and therefore the choice or budget for the ring varies.
The most popular ring given is the eternity ring also called memoire or infinity ring. This ring consists of all equally sized, side-by-side stones in a similar setting. This makes the ring appear in harmony and a continuous line that will never stop. There are several options when composing an eternity ring. You can choose to place the stones all around or half. In addition, you can decide which gemstones and colour you would like.
A promise can be given by and to anyone, so a promise ring is also given to men. Of course, these rings look different from the promise rings given to a woman. Often these rings are tougher, like a signet ring or Rolex ring. An engraving is often chosen in these rings because there is more space available . Examples of engravings include a pet name, promise, symbol, fingerprint or even an image.
